Stan B. Walters The Lie Guy® Blog
The obvious goal of any interview and interrogation technique is to get information. Unfortunately for more than 50 years during interview and interrogation techniques training, a large majority of investigators have been taught tactics that are counterproductive to that goal.
The dominant interview and interrogation technique philosophy for not only law enforcement but also for military, intelligence and even loss prevention has been what is described as a “guilt -assumptive” or “accusatory” style.
This interviewing and interrogation style has been proven to result in numerous failed interviews of not only suspects but also victims and witnesses. There is a higher rate of misdiagnosis of deception, the use of aggressive and even coercive tactics as well as significant contamination of subjects by the interviewer.
Narrative-based interviewing and interrogation produces a minimum of 60% MORE information, least likely to contaminate the subject’s knowledge and maintains a strong positive relationship between the interviewer and the subject.
