Stress reactions can easily be mistaken for deception when investigators overread behavior or rely on weak cue clusters. This archive article explains why behavioral change should guide better questions, not conclusions, and why reliable statements must be tested against facts rather than assumptions.
Behavioral changes may identify pressure points, stress, topic sensitivity, or areas needing verification, but they do not prove deception. When common stress is mislabeled as deception, the interview can begin to feed its own assumptions — and those assumptions can follow the case into the report, the investigation, and eventually the courtroom.
Stress is not deception, and behavior is not proof. Investigators may observe behavior, but reliable interviews are built by testing the subject’s account, not by guessing what a movement means.
Silence is one of the simplest tools in an interview, but also one of the most difficult to master. A well-timed pause gives the subject room to think, remember, clarify, or continue before the interviewer interrupts the flow with another question.
