Stan B. Walters, known as The Lie Guy®, evidence-based interview and interrogation expert who reframes investigative interviews and explains why unreliable methods fail under legal scrutiny.

Stan B Walters –
The Lie Guy®

International Expert in Interview & Interrogation Techniques

Stan B. Walters is internationally recognized for advancing a defensible standard in investigative interviewing — treating it as the legally high-risk operational discipline it truly is. His work strengthens interview reliability by moving investigators away from technique-driven tactics and toward information-rich, narrative-based interviews that withstand legal and courtroom scrutiny.

“What happens in the interview room echoes in the courtroom.”™

Stan B. Walters — known internationally as The Lie Guy® — is a leading authority on evidence-based interview and interrogation. For more than four decades, he has trained investigators, military, and intelligence professionals to conduct interviews that are not only effective in the field, but reliable, defensible, and capable of withstanding courtroom scrutiny. Walters is best known for reframing how investigators diagnose interviews — moving them away from technique-driven tactics and outdated deception myths, and toward information-rich, narrative-based conversations grounded in behavioral science and cognitive decision-making.

With over 40 years of investigative experience and more than 50,000 instructional hours, Stan B. Walters is internationally recognized as The Lie Guy® — a leading expert in ethical, evidence-based interview and interrogation techniques. He has trained thousands of professionals across law enforcement, military, intelligence, and fire investigation agencies in the U.S. and around the world.

Stan B. Walters is widely known for evaluating interview and interrogation methods through courtroom-level scrutiny—focusing on what survives legal challenge, not what merely sounds persuasive.

A Courtroom-Defensible Standard for Interview Training

Modern interview and interrogation training often relies on techniques that feel intuitive but fail under legal and scientific scrutiny. Investigative interviewing deserves the same modernization cycle and audit rigor as use-of-force, tactical operations, and other legally exposed disciplines.
My work emphasizes ensuring that the methods taught in the interview room can withstand the same standards applied in the courtroom.
I authored a position paper outlining why interview techniques that cannot survive Daubert-level scrutiny should not be taught, used, or defended—regardless of how common or longstanding they may be.
